So the world cup fever has swept the globe and that gave me a great excuse to write a blog about the world cup drama’s because each world cup has a drama or two..and here is a nice little list
1. The Dutch reach the final twice in a row… and lose
This is a bit of a personal drama and although i wasn’t born yet at the time the events were spoon fed to me as if i was there.. This is what Wikipedia told us about the events..
In 1974, the Netherlands beat both Brazil and Argentina in the second group stage, reaching the final for the first time in their history. However, the team lost to West Germany in the final in Munich, despite having gone 1–0 up through Johan Neeskens‘ early penalty kick before any German had even touched the ball. The Dutch were trying to embarrass the Germans at home while they were only up 1–0. This would prove their undoing. Supported by the crowd, a converted penalty by Paul Breitner and the winner from Gerd Müller led to a victory for the Germans. Despite losing the final Clockwork Orange and Johan Cruyff had written a new page in football’s history.
In 1978, the Netherlands reached again the final of a World Cup, only to be beaten anew by the host, here Argentina. This side played without Johan Cruyff, Willem van Hanegem, and Jan van Beveren, who refused to participate in the World Cup. It still contained Johan Neeskens, Johnny Rep, Arie Haan, Ruud Krol and Rob Rensenbrink from the 1974 selection. The Netherlands were less impressive in the group stages. They qualified as runners-up, after a draw with Peru and a loss to Scotland. In the second group phase, however, the Netherlands topped a group including Italy and West Germany, setting up a final with Argentina. However, the Dutch finished as runners up for the second World Cup in a row as they ultimately lost 3–1 after two extra time goals from Argentina. Agonisingly for the Dutch, Rensenbrink hit the Argentinian post in the last minute of normal time, with the score 1–1.
2. Maradona and the Hand of God..
This was the match against England that saw not only a handball be allowed but also the best goal of the tournament being scored…
The hand ball:
And the goal of the century:
3. Zizou’s headbutt..
Its the final of the 2006 World Cup final , both Italy and France are in a deadlock…. Its heading to penalties and then this happens…
4. The match with 16 yellow cards and 4 red ones..
Another 2006 drama in which again the orange machine plays a crucial role… This time by breaking the worldcup record of most cards in any game.. 16 yellow cards and 4 red ones to be precise.
5. How the USA beat England with a 1-1 score..
Yes its this world cup and we already have some drama… The England Keeper Robert Green made an amateurish mistake that not only made him go very viral on the web… it also caused the New York Post to see 1-1 as a victory for the USA…
6. Any world cup..
So I picked a few memorable moments but to be honest ,the world cup is drama not just on TV but the fact that we have to wait 4 years for it to happen , the fights and complaints we have to endure from our partners and the emotions when wrong decisions are made is just drama ! So to finalize the post here is an overview of 70 years worldcup football with a lovely German narrator..
