The buzz word these days in web design and development is that of HTML5 so what is the buzz about ? Will it replace Flash ? Will it kill the Microsoft puppy silverlight ?

HTML5 has become big with Google, they embraced the technology fully in their Chrome Browser and within their websites and since the beginning of this year even YouTube went HTML5. With the iPhone not supporting flash either (and no plans of ever supporting it in the future) you would think that flash being send packing.

The best way to monitor how the technologies are evolving is by checking how popular they are on the web in terms of search volume that is why I did a compare between the 3 technologies.

Flash(blue) vs html 5(red) vs Silverlight(yellow)

Taking a look at the graph you might see a surprising result, even though HTML 5 and Silver light are on the rise comparing to the volume with Flash it seems there is a long way to go before it gets replaced with any other technologies.

It actually reminds me a lot of the browser wars where Internet Explorer had the larger part of the market and slowly but steadily Firefox, Chrome and Safari came in to take some pieces of the pie. The difference between the browser wars and this flash one is that the users had good reason to switch to another browser, mainly because IE had some major holes in it and speed issues. Flash on the other hand doesn’t have the users complaining that much because it generally works, even though it might be slow to load and the files can become huge from a users view it works.

HTML5 and Silverlight might be a lot quicker and easier for the developers as long as most of the developers haven’t learn HTML5 or Silverlight yet and as long as the direct users aren’t complaining I don’t see flash disappearing anytime soon..

HTML 5(blue) Vs Silverlight(Red)

Update: Ian Devlin added a nice post in regards to embedding video using HTML 5. Find it here

The New York Times have a great interactive timeline that shows what influence Steve Jobs has and hasn’t had on the evolution of Apple Computers.

Photo of Steve Jobs with image of Jobs and Steve Wozniak origional founders in the background

From founding Apple on the 1st April 1976 to leaving in 1985 and then returing in 1997, this interactive timeline give you a great insight into the influence Jobs has had on the company. Most Apple fans would know what Jobs has done with Apple but the majority of people don’t.

This timeline gives a quick and simple insight into his influence on the company. The timeline is created in Flash and the interface is simple and does what it says on the tin.
